El origen de los mercados madrileños, en su acepción más Iiteral, hay que buscarlo, según los entendidos, en el siglo IX, que es cuando se puede hablar de Madrid como población. Sin embargo, entendido el mercado como oferta periódica de productos, los expertos sitúan su origen en el siglo XV, coincidiendo con una cédula del Rey Enrique IV, que autorizaba su celebración los martes.
